The Problem
I can’t play my Jazz! I found after installing Winamp in Windows 8 that it appears the Shoutcast browser control isn’t handling (what I think to be) a lightbox advertisement and it prevents you from playing the stream.
[stextbox id=”info” caption=”Update” collapsing=”false” collapsed=”false”]I have installed IE10 on a Windows 7 system to confirm if it was specific to IE10 and after installing IE10, Winamp indeed reproduces the “black screen” advertisement problem… The workaround, however, still works.[/stextbox]
The Workaround
I found a workaround after some trial an error.
- Search for whichever station you want in the Shoutcast control in Winamp
- When you find the stream you want, click the Star (to the right of the station) to Bookmark it.
- Go to the Bookmarks option on the left pane
- Now, just double-click your station you bookmarked to play it
Now, back to my Smooth Jazz.
Thanks
Worked fo rme
Still not working in Windows 8 I take it? I’ve gone back to 7 for the time being for development reasons. Hopefully a new release of Winamp resolves this or an update to IE framework. Not sure what the actual cause of this issue was.
Brilliant ! π
Wonderful workaround solution, Rich – until Winamp catches up with Win8!
Rich, that worked for me; thanks, much, sir!
Thanks for the work around. Solved my problems with winamp shoutcast.
Not an issue with Windows8 or Shoutcast/Winamp but simply a configuration issue with Windows Control Panel Internet options.
You need to switch some security options to enabled or at least ask setting for scripting and DirectX.
I don’t exactly know which options need to be set (I set all of them temporarily to ask) and once you were able to add the Shoutcast TV/Radio from within th Winamp Online Services browser, you may revert those settings to secure π
Hope this works for all Shoutcast fans,
rob
Hi Rob,
Thanks for the information. I’m going to test a theory on this which would be a more suitable “work-around”.
I am thinking that by adding the Winamp website (and whichever subdomains…) to the Trusted Zone in IE10, this may overcome the problem. I need to check to see if the Winamp browser loads secure Winamp site though. I’ll report back on my findings and update the blog. Thanks again for your feedback!
Hi Rich, did it work for you? I’m not using Internet Explorer as many others are not. So first I was surprised by that dependency. Nevertheless, once you were able to add the radio/tv station these settings are not relevant anymore and you may revert them.
Not sure whether it works when IE was uninstalled π
Trusted Zone option didn’t work. So it is a scripting issue possibly that needs to be allowed. Either way, I think there is an active bug report with Nullsoft on this issue. Hopefully they’ll fully resolve the issue and make it whole again. =)
Thank you for figuring a way around this dilemma. I’m using 64B Win 7, and shoutcast worked for several months. It quit during the Christmas holidays, right after I taught my wife to choose her own music. It went into the black Screen mode and would not change stations.
I thank you for posting the workaround.
Thanks man, been wondering about this
A simple and effective workaround. Thank you, Rich! Enjoy the Smooth Jazz!
